Class Pet

When the kids came to class there was a huge sheet in the shape of a box next to Mr. Rorks desk.

“That’s gotta be 7 ft tall!” Ethan marveled. “And 7 ft long.” All the kids were talking about it.

“I think it’s 9ft by 8ft” Jenny guessed.

“20ft by 15ft!” Mateo said enthusiastically. Mateo couldn’t count.

Rrrriiinnngg. The school bell rang.

“What’s under the sheet Mr Rork?” Ethan asked.

Mr Rork adjusted his tie and smiled. His tie had all kinds of animals on it.

“Well class today is a special day. I thought what we need is a class pet!”

All the kids gasped with delight. Some of the other teachers at Berryton School had class pets. Ms. Roob had a tank of fish. Miss Weathers had a cute gerbil named David. Mr. Bose had a rabbit named Flopsy because of his ears. Mr. Bose had trouble hearing his students because of his floppy ears. Ms Qwen had a rubber duck but everyone thought that was a lame class pet.

“What pet is it!?” Jenny squealed with delight. She could hardly contain herself.

Mr Rork smiled wide. He stood up and walked over to the sheet. With a flourish he pulled it off.

“A Baboon!” Owen shouted. The kids were shocked. Some of them were excited.  Others were dumbstruck. Jenny looked horrified.

The baboon was sleeping but when the sheet was removed he slowly started to wake up. He looked around at everyone. Then he started walking around his cage inspecting everything.

“COOL!” Mikey beamed. “Can I play with him Mr. Rork?” he asked

“Sure!”

Mikey ran over to the cage and Mr. Rork opened it up. The baboon leaped out and attacked Mikey.

“Ouch! That hurts!” Mikey cried.

Mr. Rork put his hands on his hips and frowned.

“No rough housing with the class pet Mikey.” He threw a banana into the cage. The baboon leaped after it. Mr. Rork closed the door. Mikey was all scratched up and bruised.

“Now class, baboons are a big responsibility. So I’ve only rented him for a week.”

“Awww” the kids sighed.

“Awww but Mr. Rork we only just started bonding” Mikey said as he limped back to his desk.

“I know, I know. We’ll see how the week goes. Maybe we’ll get him again. Maybe we’ll get other pets. We’ll just have to see. Now what should we name him while we have him?”

“Banana Bandit!” Owen yelled out.

“Jungle Jester!” Ethan said.

“Banana Puddin’!” Alice said. She burst out laughing.

“Bigglesworth!” Lucas said.

“Snickerdoodle!” Nora said.

“Jellybean!” Jenny said.

“Let’s take a vote,” said Mr. Rork. Jellybean won the vote by 2 votes.

By the end of the week all the kids had been attacked by Jellybean. They loved him.
